Lee Chongyang & Cheng Chunyan · Innovative traditional Dyeing · Young Generation, Young Vision
Li Chongyang and Cheng Chunyan are a young couple dedicated to the improvement and innovation of traditional printing and dyeing techniques. They often spend months of research to experiment with new printing and dyeing effects. This contributes to the extraordinary artistry of their work.
Li Chongyang was born in 1994 in Yongji City, Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province, in an ordinary farming family, the family relies on dyeing cloth to subsidize the family's household and grew up watching his grandmother dyeing fabrics, so he was familiar with the various processes of plant dyeing. It can be said that the process of traditional fabric dyeing is complicated and the whole process is hard work. The elders of his family had always hoped that Li Chongyang could get rid of the status of the old generation of craftsmen and become an intellectual with a golden rice bowl. But things did not go as planned. Since childhood Li Chongyang on printing and dyeing has shown great interest, and there has been a silent study. When he entered the university campus, he came into contact with Mr. Guan Lansheng, who specialized in dyeing and valerian, and began to study dyeing and valerian in-depth, from Mr. Guan, he gained the inspiration of traditional printing and dyeing techniques as the basis, supplemented by Chinese painting techniques for the cultural and artistic creation of his hometown Yongji.
In 2015, he met his lover, Cheng Chunyan, and the two of them shared the same vision and began to create works based on the family's inherited skills and the knowledge of printing and dyeing taught by Mr Guan, at the same time, the two of them also sorted out the historical origins of printing and dyeing in Shaanxi Province, and actively participated in the activities of intangible cultural heritage of the province, so as to pass down the characteristics of printing and dyeing belonging to the northern region and to develop them.
