Ren Shu'e and Zhang Ya Ting · Cloth Art & Embroidery

Ren Shu'e, born in 1974 in Ruicheng County, Shanxi Province, is a master of arts and crafts in Shanxi Province and a representative inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Ruicheng Cloth Art. After graduating from high school, she actively participated in the creation of fabric art under the cultivation of her mother-in-law, Zhang Yating, and traveled abroad many times to participate in exhibitions and study. This year, 66-year-old Zhang Yating's exquisite cloth tiger skills also inherited from the older generation of women in the family.

During the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s, cloth tigers became the target of the "Four Olds" and the craft was almost lost. In the 1970s and 1980s, due to economic difficulties, Zhang Yating picked up the craft and began to make cloth tigers and children's tiger shoes, which she sent to Yongle Palace for others to sell in order to supplement her family's income. At that time, she didn't know what intangible cultural heritage was, but she just liked to do it, and she was able to earn a few hundred dollars for her family every year, so she stuck with it.

In the 1990s, Zhang Yating's cloth tigers became famous in Ruicheng County, and in 1994, she received an invitation to participate in the Fourth World Women's Conference, which was held in Beijing the following year. For a whole summer, Zhang Yating and her mother each led a group of people to make cloth tigers for the conference. At the World Women's Conference, Zhang Yating's tigers were loved by women delegates from all over the world, and more than 20 boxes of tigers were snapped up. Zhang Yating herself was named one of the 100 capable women. At that time, she learned that cloth tigers were loved by people all over the world.

Now, Ren Shu'e is dedicated to researching the traditional cloth art, embroidery, paper-cutting, and other folk techniques that have been passed down for thousands of years along the Golden Triangle of the Yellow River at the southern gate of Shanxi. She constantly innovates and develops heart works with local cultural characteristics. Her mother, Yang Yating, focuses her energy on training the inheritors so that Ruicheng Cloth Art will be succeeded by more young folk artists who love folk cloth art, have culture, and ability, and can innovate, so as to carry forward this folk treasure that has been passed down in the Yellow River basin for thousands of years.
